How to layer rose with smoky oud
Rose is velvety, a little green and a little spicy. Smoky oud is dark, smoky and resinous.
- Starting ratio
- one spray of oud to two of the rose
- Best for
- Evenings, cooler weather and formal occasions.
- Note families
- Floral and Woody
Why this combination works
Rose and oud is a classic pairing because they sit at opposite ends of the same spectrum. The rose softens the smoke and bitterness of the oud, and the oud gives the rose depth and a dark, resinous backbone.
How to layer it
- Start on clean, moisturised skin. Unscented lotion helps both scents last.
- Apply the smoky oud first, since it is the stronger of the two. Use one spray of oud to two of the rose as a starting point.
- Wait about a minute, then add the rose over it or on a different pulse point so it is not buried.
- Give the blend 20 to 30 minutes to settle before judging it. Notes shift as they warm on skin.
The blend as a scent blueprint
This is how the combination maps across a fragrance's top, heart and base. Use it to look for individual scents, or to describe the result you want.
- Topsaffron, pink pepper
- Heartdamask rose
- Baseoud, amber, patchouli
What to avoid
Oud is powerful, so a heavy hand will overwhelm the rose completely. Start with a single spray of oud and build slowly.

Build my blueprintFrequently asked questions
Is rose and oud too heavy for daily wear?
It is a rich blend. Use it sparingly or save it for evenings, and keep the oud to a single spray.
Does it work in summer?
It can, with fewer sprays. In heat, oud projects strongly, so apply to clothing or one pulse point only.
