How to layer dry cedar with bright citrus
Dry cedar is dry, crisp and pencil-shaving clean. Bright citrus is sparkling and zesty, like bergamot, lemon or grapefruit.
- Starting ratio
- one spray of cedar to two of the citrus
- Best for
- Work, gym-to-office days and a clean, confident signature.
- Note families
- Woody and Citrus
Why this combination works
Dry cedar gives structure and a clean, crisp woodiness, and citrus gives sparkle. Together they smell like a fresh, tailored cologne with more staying power than citrus alone.
How to layer it
- Start on clean, moisturised skin. Unscented lotion helps both scents last.
- Apply the dry cedar first, since it is the stronger of the two. Use one spray of cedar to two of the citrus as a starting point.
- Wait about a minute, then add the bright citrus over it or on a different pulse point so it is not buried.
- Give the blend 20 to 30 minutes to settle before judging it. Notes shift as they warm on skin.
The blend as a scent blueprint
This is how the combination maps across a fragrance's top, heart and base. Use it to look for individual scents, or to describe the result you want.
- Toplemon, grapefruit
- Heartpetitgrain
- Basecedarwood, vetiver
What to avoid
Do not choose a smoky or sweet wood here. You want dry, clean cedar so the blend stays crisp.

Build my blueprintFrequently asked questions
Is this a good beginner layer?
Yes. Both notes are easy to wear and it is hard to get wrong.
How do I make the blend last?
Spray the cedar on skin first and the citrus on clothing so the woodiness anchors the freshness.
